What Are The Odds?

Authors Note:

This came to me while reading A Little Bit of Magic by CiraArana. So I guess the opening scene can be thanks to her wonderful writing ( I really like that one very much ^-^). I haven't read more than 10 ish or so SessXKag fan-fics, but I have read some good ones, so I hope it helps.

This is my first fic, but don't let that frighten you off! I have, ever since the 4th grade, been sent to special field trips and higher level classes for my unique writing abilities.

So, with out further to do, lets put my abilities to the test, and I hope you enjoy the show~ -bows, and exits stage left-.

Disclaimer: I will never own Sesshomaru, Inu Yasha, Kagome, or anyone nor thing of importance.... le sigh.

Prologue~

"Come now little miko, surely your not tiring on me so soon?"

Kagome's heart pumped almost as fast as her legs, running faster than she ever had in gym classes, and longer than she thought possible.

"Your slowing down, your smell grows stronger with each of my strides."

Her arms kept forcing her body to stay balanced as she ran, dodging boulders and crevices in the small winding pathway up the mountain.

"And your powers, I can sense them weakening."

As rain trailed down her face, her eyes became more and more blurred by gusts of wind; she felt her legs giving out.

"Kikyo would have lasted longer."

Kagome's brow furrowed and she began to pick up speed once more in her mad dash up the ever inclining path. As she came to another set of fallen rocks, she paused and turned around in time to see Naraku approach with far greater speed than her own.

With swiftness she didn't think she could produce, she notched an arrow into her bow, and let go; watching it catch his left leg with bright light.

She threw the bow down, now wasted of all arrows, and began to climb the intrusive heap of rocks. As she skidded down the other side and hastened off once more, Naraku's cold chuckle caught her ears.

'Please, Kami-sama! Help me!'

Just as she thought her legs would finally fail and she may as well tumble off the side of the darkened cliff, she turned around a narrow corner, and spotted a small gap in the wall not but a few feet away.

With renewed vigor, she raced towards it and ducked in just as a particularly loud clash of thunder crashed against the mountain. Kagome crawled in just a few feet, before losing all feeling in her legs. With out the ability to crawl and further, she sat up against the sharp wall, and waited with heavy breath.

~~~~~~
Sesshoumaru had never been one to believe in chance.
In the battle field, or in a simple game of Go, chance was never a plausible belief. To simply select an act because "the Mistress of Luck was on their side" never sat well with him.
Skill was Sesshoumaru's game.
One who could understand the intricate workings of a problem, study it from all meanings, angles, objectives, views, and variables, and then use these ideas to form possibilities, and tests, could then find solution without fault.
This was true skill, and in this game, Sesshoumaru was lord.
So the thought of chance had never sat in the taiyoukai's thoughts for any problem--untill now.
Had he not had battled with the trio of wolf demons from the Eastern territories that evening, he would not be needing of rest to recover some wounds to his person. But that was not all, today, a rather violent cloud had decided to plague the land, and a harsh storm ensued; thus forcing him to find a dry place to rest. Which lead him to the small mountain, and thus into a cave.
Now, another set of variables was to be considered. He had dosed off sometime during his process of healing, which allows for a body to heal much quicker, but also let his guard down. A vital mistake he would not make again so soon. Another issue, this evening, of them all and of all the times, a certain miko was being chased by a certain hanyou of great powers up a certain mountain. To make the problem all the 'better', the miko had decided this cave on this very mountain was ideal to find security within.
He could instantly smell her fear, mixed with sweat, blood, and rain. He listened silently to her heavy pants and her heart racing to keep her alive.
The Lord of the Western Lands, waited calmly as he watched the miko from the corner of his eye, un moving as to not catch her attention.
Through the pouring rain and wailing winds, he could sense the dark hanyou coming closer.
Sesshoumaru instinctively lowered his own youki as to not be noticed. The last thing the taiyoukai wished was to battle the obnoxious half breed, and in his slightly weekend state, it may be a tad difficult.
His eyes watched her as she turned her own to the outside of the cave, he knew that she could sense him approach. He noted her hand quickly claw around and object hanging from her neck, but his eyes did not catch what it was in time.
As he sensed Naraku within to close a distance for even his own comfort, the girl did something he did not expect. And he gasped ever so slightly as her powers flared to life.
~~~~~~

As Kagome sensed his youki get stronger, she knew she had to do something, or she would surely die.

Flashes of her life, her school, her family, her friends, Inu Yasha, and their happy faces, flashed across her eyes in such rapidity, it resulted in a migrain. But she knew she couldn't die, that this was not the end, and that somehow, some one would save her.

'Inu Yasha will come, I know he will.'

She could feel him getting closer, and out of intuition, she wrapped her left hand, which was covered in a decent amount of blood, around the near completed Shikon no Tama.

'Please, someone, anyone, save me!'

He was so near, her breathing froze, and her blood pumping was so loud in her ears, she thought to scream just to cover it up.

Without her knowledge, her miko powers began to instantly flare and take control over her form. Though she didn't realize it, Kagome was not control over her right hand as it raised itself up toward the entrance of the cave.

Her hand was flat against the opening, as if a wall was present, and for a second she thought she'd gone insane. But as her powers began to concentrate themselves within her hand, Kagome knew what to do.

~~~~~~~
Sesshoumaru watched in awe as the miko cast a powerful barrier over the entrance to their temporary hiding; its glow was near the shimmer of a perfect pont in sunlight, hues of pink and slight blues shifted through it.
As he turned his eyes back towards the priestess, her head was slumped and her eyes where closed; she had blacked out.
Before he could draw his sword, Naraku attempted to enter the cavern.
His attempts were meet with defeat, however, as the force he ran against the barrier resulted in most of his body being purified. He fell back wards off the mountain side, what was left of him, from view, and as quickly as his aura had appeared, it was once again gone.
Sesshoumaru raised his right brow at this; it was quite peculiar, he had never seen nor had he expected to see the full potential of a priestesses protective abilities, especially from the prestresses side. While it was very strange seeming, it wasn't all so different from a demons youki.
His attention turned back to the girl as she slumped forward, still leaning against the shrewd wall, but now well out of it.
Sesshoumaru was now stuck in a rather small crevice in the side of a mountain during a storm with a miko that worked with his younger brother whom was chassed by Naraku and had enough power to fend him off and passed out with a barrier up, resulting in him being stuck.
For the first time in Sesshoumaru's life, he believed in luck, and knew he had none on his side.
Prologue~ End
Authors Note: So, I hope you liked it! If you did, or didn't, please leave a rating and review would be nice too! I love personal notes on improvement, critiques and all that, my email is in my bio. I will begin work on Act One some time tomorrow, but I think I wana do some sorta artwork from this chapter, like the moment in the cave.
It was only so short cause it's a prologue, and any prologue is supposed to be short.
Always looking for someone to beta my works~
